Mushrooms have the potential to create a billion offspring in just one day. If all the spores were released from one gill, it would cover over 12 square meters with baby mushrooms. The wind currents carry the spores along until they find a nice moist home to germinate. Not all spores are released from gills. Mould spores just drift around in the air and the puffball fungus puffs out its spores when bumped or squeezed. If you place a mushroom cap with its gills down on a piece of blotting paper and leave it for a couple of hours, when you get back and lift the mushroom up you will find a beautiful print made from the fine microscopic spores. Each mushroom has its own imprint.
